Why Purification Matters

Salah is not valid without taharah (purification). Allah loves those who purify themselves (Quran 9:108). The Prophet ﷺ said: "The key to prayer is purification." Cleansing the body before prayer is both a physical and spiritual condition for valid worship.

When to Do Wudu vs Ghusl

Wudu (الوضوء): Do wudu before every prayer when you are in a state of minor impurity. It is sufficient for the five daily prayers and voluntary prayers unless something has broken it.

Ghusl (الغسل): Do ghusl when you are in a state of major impurity: after sexual intercourse or emission of semen (janabah), after the end of menstruation (hayd), or after post-childbirth bleeding (nifas). A valid ghusl also fulfills wudu—you do not need to do wudu again until something breaks it.

Step-by-Step Wudu (Ablution)

  1. Make intention in your heart and say Bismillah.
  2. Wash both hands up to the wrists 3 times.
  3. Rinse mouth 3 times, then rinse nose (inhale water, blow out) 3 times.
  4. Wash face 3 times (ear to ear, forehead to chin).
  5. Wash right arm to elbow 3 times, then left arm to elbow 3 times.
  6. Wipe head once (wet hands, pass from front to back and back to front).
  7. Wipe inside and outside of ears once (with fresh water or remaining moisture).
  8. Wash right foot up to ankle 3 times, then left foot 3 times.

Step-by-Step Ghusl (Full Body Wash)

  1. Make intention to remove major impurity. Say Bismillah.
  2. Wash hands, then wash private parts.
  3. Perform a complete wudu (as above). You may delay washing feet to the end.
  4. Pour water over head 3 times, ensuring it reaches the roots of the hair.
  5. Pour water over the rest of the body—right side, then left. Ensure every part is washed with no dry spots.
  6. Move and wash the feet if not already done.

What Invalidates Wudu

You must perform wudu again (or ghusl if required) before the next prayer when any of the following occurs:

  • Passing wind (from front or back)
  • Urine or stool
  • Deep sleep (where you lose awareness)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Emission of madhy (pre-seminal fluid) or maniy (semen)—requires ghusl
  • Sexual intercourse—requires ghusl
  • End of menstruation or post-childbirth bleeding—requires ghusl

If in doubt whether wudu was broken, perform wudu again to be safe.

"Make Witr the last of your night prayers."

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Bukhari & Muslim)
